LINE-EXTENSION INNOVATION.
Line-extension innovation lends itself to the volume-operations model in particular because so much of the cost of entering a new segment has already been born by prior efforts.
Unlike line-extension innovations that expand the market by bring ing in new customers, enhancement innovations are focused pri marily on earning more margin dollars from existing customers, either by keeping them as loyal customers or by upgrading them to premium offerings.
The goal is to complement long-cycle product innovation and medium-cycle line-extension innovation with short-cycle enhancement innova tion, as the following examples illustrate:
